A place where I spent my teenage years

Living Root Bridges - Close to Shillong where I spent my Teenage Years

Ref: Wikipedia June 27, 2019 The roots of invention Living root bridges like this can be found in the tropical rainforests of Meghalaya, a state in northeast India that is among the wettest places on Earth. The gentle waterways that flow through the region’s valleys become gushing torrents during the summer monsoon season and will wash away traditional bamboo bridges. So, generations of indigenous Khasi people have devised a way of building root bridges by shaping living trees, like this one near the village of Mawsynram. It works like this: Rubber fig trees are planted or located on opposite riverbanks. As the trees' above-ground roots grow, the Khasi will guide them across the water, sometimes with the support of temporary scaffolding like bamboo. After years of tending, the roots will eventually join and take hold of each other, forming a living suspension bridge that provides safe passage over the swollen river. The innovation has proved critical to the Khasi people. In ...

Holidays - Travel Now

Now that Christmas and New Year 2020 are fast approaching, perhaps, you are considering new travel plans? Here in the midwest (Indiana), many young college people are eager to fly out to diverse destinations. I was skimming through some sites and I saw this one:

A Comment -- awesome

Imagine -- somebody trusted me and left a comment for me. I got so excited that I had to thank him here. Any way, Greetings my friend Dipak Varsani and fellow blogger - I'm hoping you're a resident of Shillong? Still, Welcome to my blog and thank you for visiting my blog!!

Shillong - Meghalaya - Assam

As you well know, I grew up in Shillong. My fondest memories are those of my father waking us up in the wee hours of the morning with bed tea (served while you're still in bed); an enticement to wake up and start cramming for final exams (school). We lived far away from school so we had to walk quite a distance to catch the bus!! Tea has always been a welcoming beverage in our household of six siblings: As an affiliate, I may earn a small commission from any item you purchase but no additional cost to you.

Tea Country - Shillong, Meghalaya, India

Image
I spent my teen-age years in Shillong. Shillong in the 1950s was still considered as being in Assam. Now, it's Meghalaya, India. My high school buddies and I would hang out over cups of tea and dosas at local restaurants. We were not allowed to go to clubs so the only place we could really sit around and talk was in an Indiana or Chinese restaurant. We enjoyed drinking tea, a beverage enjoyed by all. I love this site I found on a random search:

Shillong is often on my Mind

I have been back for almost three weeks from NYC. I spent 23 days between Long Island City and NYC. I will start posting some of my adventures on my other blogs as well. My younger sister who lives in the U K has already booked her flight to Sydney for May 8, 2020. We are planning to visit my older son, his wife and my grandchildren. I am still browsing for a decent fare. For any of you searching for good rates check this out:

Tea Gardens of Assam

When I was growing up in Shillong, Meghalaya (Assam - India), my high school buddies and I would sometimes go for long strols along Police Bazaar and stop for tea and conversation with other friends. "Hangouts" were always awaited early by us (teen-agers). We could relax, talk about the latest novels or books; ponder world events; above all we'd enjoy our tea!! In those days in the late 1950s and early 1960s, tea was one of Assam's biggest exports and it remains.

Tea is synonymous with Shillong

As a lover of tea: tea in the morning, tea in the afternoon, tea at dinner time; I want to say that the tea grown in multiple plantations of Assam are incredibly aromatic like the Assam black tea, Indian tea, the English Breakfast tea. Tea and Teas of Assam display variants that many tea companies around the world seek out and promote. People in Assam especially in Shillong cannot live without tea, literally, actually.

Scotland of the East

Image
As many know, Shillong is considered "the Scotland of the East." As a young girl growing up in Shillong, we wore a lot of plaid in the winter but during the summer, we loved to wear summery dresses. My mother would sew identical dresses for me as well as for my best friend whenever she would sleep over. At one point, Denim "pedal pushers" were a craze and very popular. My best friend and I had our parents shop for identical pedal pushers for us. It was so much fun. I looked at Belle Lily for other fashion merchandizing:

Dimapur, Nagaland, India

I was so excited to come across this video of Dimapur. My father lived in Dimapur, Nagaland, India for a few years and he was an officer in the Indian army.   Our mother, my younger sister and youngest brother would visit him for holiday while my other siblings (we being older) would live in Shillong while attending school.  This was in the early the1960s.  This video below brings back warm memories. Enjoy Jaunt Monkey's cool video:

This definitely makes me homesick for Shillong

Lots of videos on Shillong

I had not been writing for a while and so when I looked up Shillong recently, I am now amazed; it has developed in every sense of the word.  Frankly, I'm in awe.  Of course, I have been popping in and out watching videos on Shillong and surrounding tourist-ty sights including Cheerapunji.  I will try to obtain and attach a few videos as soon as I can. In the meantime, if you are planning on flying to India, I am told by some of my colleagues that a good agent is Cheap Fares To Top 20 Spots! Take up to $20◊ off with Promo Code TOP20. Book Now!

Shillong - you're the best

I am in awe: this is so beautiful; as children, my siblings and I would accompany my parents on a drive to Cherapunji where we would have a picnic. My parents would leave bottles of drinks in the clean cool water to the drinks cool. I miss Shillong a lot.

Shillong on my mind

Today, I talked to my sister who lives in England. We talk all the time but today is special. All my siblings and I spent our teenage years in Shillong. It was where we made friends and bonded. Today, we are in touch with many.

Missing a place where I grew up (Shillong)

As a teenager, I grew to love Shillong. It's rightly referred to as "The Scotland of the East" Nostalgia is what I'm experiencing at this moment as I saw this on Reddit https://flydealfare.com/
